The Teatro di San Carlo, former Real Teatro di San Carlo, often referred to as the Teatro San Carlo is an opera house in Naples. Overlooking Piazza Trieste e Trento, is one of the major theaters of Europe. It is the oldest opera house in Europe, having been founded in 1737 (41 years before the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, built only in 1778, and the bigger Italian theater of the peninsula. Can accommodate viewers and has almost tremilatrecento five tiers of boxes arranged in a horseshoe, plus a large royal box, a gallery and a stage about thirty feet long. From 1 October 2011, the theater hosts the real MEMUS (short for "memory" and "Museum"), in which historical museum exhibit works of art (paintings, photographs, musical instruments, costumes, historical documents, a music archive audio and also video images) that trace the history of St. Charles himself, and Italian opera in general. The museum starts with the historical path built by Charles of Bourbon in the adjacent royal residence, which leads to the theater, visiting historic environment is not visible or if you enter the royal palace, or to St. Charles as a spectator. Il Teatro di San Carlo, già Real Teatro di San Carlo, citato spesso come Teatro San Carlo, è un teatro lirico di Napoli. Affacciato su piazza Trieste e Trento, è uno fra i maggiori teatri d'Europa. È il più antico teatro d'opera in Europa, essendo stato fondato nel 1737 (41 anni prima del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, costruito solo nel 1778; nonché il più capiente teatro all'italiana della penisola. Può ospitare quasi tremilatrecento spettatori e conta cinque ordini di palchi disposti a ferro di cavallo, più un ampio palco reale, un loggione ed un palcoscenico lungo circa trentacinque metri. Dal 1º ottobre 2011 il real teatro ospita il MEMUS (acronimo di "memoria" e "museo"), museo storico nel quale si espongono opere d'arte (quadri, fotografie, strumenti musicali, costumi, documenti d’epoca, un archivio musicale audio ed anche una delle immagini video) che ripercorrono la storia del san Carlo stesso e dell'opera italiana in generale. Il museo inizia con il percorso storico voluto da Carlo di Borbone nell'adiacente residenza reale, dalla quale si accede al teatro, visitando storici ambienti non visibili né se si accede al palazzo reale, né al san Carlo come spettatore.
